According to Singapore Dragon Boat Association, the Century Race is "essentially a 100 meter super-sprint race". It is where fast strokes may cause surge better than long pulls and the lighter boat may outrun the stronger boat.
The 5th Century Race on 4 and 5 March 2023 is currently being looked back fondly on as "that time Singapore has sweater weather". Although it was a pleasant break from our usual blindingly sunny days, it was not an easy time for racers then. Particularly on Saturday, it was cold, wet and windy.
The venue at Jurong Lake itself is known for its sweeping current rumoured to favour Line 1 and 4 and puts Lane 2 and 3 to some disadvantage. Keeping to one's race lane is a task befitting the more experienced coxswains.
Punggol Coast CSN a.k.a. Team Kraken sent down four categories over the two days and true to our community sporting spirits, everyone had their chance to shine in each DB12 boat sprinting down the teh tarik-like water towards the finish line. Here are our best timings:
Senior Mixed 39.527 seconds
Ladies (minor final champion) 39.319 seconds
PA GRO Mixed 35.562 seconds
PA GRO Open (3rd) 36.592 seconds
